Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld feels an early goal for his side tonight could change the complexion of their Europa League tie against Borussia Dortmund.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men suffered a chastening 3-0 defeat at the hands of Dortmund in the first leg at the Westfalenstadion last week, and are aware that they are odds on favourites to be knocked out of the competition at the moment.

Spurs need to score at least three goals and concede none to even take the last 16 tie to extra time, but Alderweireld has not lost hope of staging a comeback at White Hart Lane under the lights.

He admits that it will require something special from Tottenham to beat Dortmund, but feels an early goal could change the dynamics of the second leg in north London tonight.

Speaking to Spurs TV, the Tottenham defender said: “It is going to be difficult, but we have to believe.

“At the Lane, something special can happen; it will depend on how the game is going, but if we get an early goal, you never know.”

Dortmund have not lost a game since the turn of the year, and are currently on an unbeaten run of 12 in all competitions.
