Leeds United boss Steve Evans feels Mirco Antenucci has a good shot at winning the Championship’s Player of the Month award for March, though he will not quibble if it goes to Burnley's Sam Vokes.

The Italian came close to leaving the club in January, but he stayed put and has been in fine nick for the club, especially during the month of March, where he played a key role in Leeds’ three-game winning run.

While he went goalless in their defeat to Huddersfield, Antenucci notched up four goals in the other three games and was crucial to Leeds rise to mid-table security after a run of horrendous form.

Evans lavished praise on the veteran striker and feels along with Burnley’s in-form striker Sam Vokes, Antenucci is the front runner to bag the Player of the Month accolade.

The Leeds boss told LUTV: “What a wonderful month Mirco Antenucci had.

“Thoroughly deserves to be in that special group of players.

“When you look at the four players, all rightfully have big opportunity to win but I think it will come down to either Mirco or the boy Sam Vokes.

"I think he is an exceptional striker, and is a big part of what Burnley are doing.”

Rotherham United’s box-to-box midfielder Lee Frecklington and Sheffield Wednesday defender Tom Lees are the other two nominees in the list.
