Rafael Benitez has beaten off competition from Leicester City and Southampton to take goalkeeper Matz Sels to Newcastle United.

The custodian is close to joining the Magpies and has now travelled to England to put the finishing touches to the deal.

According to Belgian daily Het Laaste Nieuws, it is Benitez who has charmed Sels into choosing the Magpies, with Leicester and Southampton also chasing his signature.

The 24-year-old Belgian goalkeeper currently plies his trade with Gent in his homeland and helped the club to the Belgian Pro League title in the 2014/15 campaign.

Sels is now set to take the next step in his career by moving to England to play at St. James' Park under Benitez.
