Former Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson believes the Bhoys will try to get into the head of temperamental Rangers midfielder Joey Barton this Saturday.

The veteran midfielder is known for his temperamental attitude, but so far this season the Rangers new boy has managed to keep his composure while on the pitch.

However, Barton has done his bit to generate some heat from Celtic by attacking club captain Scott Brown, who he feels is not good enough to be in the same class as him.

Thompson is confident that Celtic's players will try to rile up the 34-year-old former Newcastle United man during the Old Firm derby this Saturday at Parkhead.

Former Celtic midfielder Thompson told STV: "I know Joey well, worked with him at Newcastle.

"He does do a lot of talking but if I could give him any advice it would be to go and do it on the pitch. Don't do it off the pitch because he's a good footballer.

"[Celtic players] might try to capitalise on that with Joey or Rangers players might try to get at Scott Brown but Brown has been there, seen it and done it.

"Joey is an experienced player, he's been around the block but just don't get involved and play the game."

Despite his reputation, Barton has been sent off just eight times during his long career, and has picked up 107 bookings.

Mark Warburton will be hoping that the temperamental midfielder manages to keep his head under the heat of the Old Firm derby at Parkhead.
