Kevin Wimmer is of the opinion that Mauricio Pochettino understands what it like to be a defender as the Tottenham Hotspur manager used to be a centre-back during his playing days.

The Argentine, who took charge of Spurs in 2014, helped the club to finish in fifth spot in the 2014/15 Premier League campaign.

However, Tottenham conceded 53 league goals that season, the highest amongst the top 13 clubs in the division.

Pochettino managed to successfully address the problems at the back as the north London club finished third in the Premier League last season, enjoying the best defensive record in the league; Spurs conceded just 35 times in 38 games.

And Wimmer, who joined Tottenham from 1.FC Koln last summer, feels Pochettino has effectively managed to pass on his experience of playing as a centre-back to the current crop of defenders at White Hart Lane.

“He always pushes us in every training session”, Austrian defender Wimmer told Spurs TV.

“He always wants us to get us better and better in every training session.

“I also think his tactical work is very good.

"You can see that he was a centre-back in former times, and he knows what it’s like.”

Wimmer, who is yet to make any appearance in the present campaign, played 21 games in all competitions last season.
