Feyenoord defender Rick Karsdorp admits that he should have done better to put his side ahead against Manchester United last night when he got an opportunity in the first half.

While Manchester United scored an emphatic 4-0 win over the Dutch outfit at Old Trafford in the Europa League, Feyenoord could have been ahead midway through the first half when Sergio Romero pulled off back-to-back saves from Karsdorp and Dirk Kuyt’s shots, the latter being the more stunning effort from the Argentine goalkeeper.

However, Karsdorp admits that he could have and should have done better with his shot, which was hit straight at the Manchester United goalkeeper.

Karsdorp told Dutch broadcaster RTV Rijnmond: “Maybe that’s why I became a defender.

“I tried to hit the ball on the full, a few centimeters right or left [of the goalkeeper] and it would have been a goal; I can blame myself.”

The 21-year-old defender admits that Feyenoord could have done better with the limited opportunities they created last night.

And while he believes his side didn’t play poorly for a majority of the game, he has conceded that they fell apart in the last quarter of the encounter at Old Trafford.

“We did let them play football and we knew that we would get our chances, but then you have to take them too.

“Maybe we did little wrong in the first 60-65 minutes and we can play football, which we showed, but the last 20-25 minutes made no sense.”

Feyenoord need a win in their last Europa League game against Fenerbahce and hope Manchester United suffer a shock defeat at Zorya Luhansk a fortnight later in order to qualify for the last 32 of the competition.
