Former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann feels the Reds are doing their best to become a “laughing stock” after the club apologised to Southampton for unsettling Virgil van Dijk.

The Merseyside giants were heavily linked with making a move for the Saints defender and it was reported in some corners on Monday that the Dutchman had chosen the Anfield outfit over Chelsea and Manchester City.

Southampton, who were angered by the reports as they had not given permission for Liverpool to talk to Van Dijk, reported the incident to the Premier League.

As a result, Liverpool’s chase for the Netherlands international dramatically collapsed on Wednesday night, with the Merseyside giants releasing a statement and apologising for creating media speculation around the player.

Liverpool also made their intentions clear about dropping all interest in the 25-year-old.

And Hamann thinks the whole saga regarding Van Dijk has made Liverpool a “laughing stock.”

“Club is doing its best to become a laughing stock”, he tweeted along with posting a picture of Liverpool’s statement.

“Liverpool where have you gone?”

Hamann, who went on to add that he would have loved to see Van Dijk at Anfield, however admitted that there is very little chance of seeing the centre-back in Liverpool colours now.

“Apparently not, which is a shame”, he replied on Twitter, when asked if there is still a chance of Van Dijk signing for Liverpool.

“Not many better ones about.

“Would have loved to see him at Anfield.”
