Middlesbrough have offered former Leeds United head coach Garry Monk the manager’s job, according to the BBC.

Monk, who managed to make his mark at Elland Road after taking charge of Leeds last summer, shockingly stepped down from his post last month.

It was claimed that Monk was between Middlesbrough and Sunderland, who were both relegated from the Premier League this term.

But it seems the Riverside Stadium outfit have won the race for the 38-year-old after Boro chairman Steve Gibson decided to give him the nod.

Monk led Leeds to a finish of seventh in the Championship last season.

Middlesbrough sacked Aitor Karanka in March in a bid to stay in the Premier League, but still suffered relegation.

Monk has been heavily tipped to take current Leeds first team coach James Beattie with him to Middlesbrough, though his assistant at Elland Road, Pep Clotet, looks likely to stay with the Whites.
