Leeds United legend Eddie Gray thinks Liam Cooper has it in him to emulate former Chelsea star John Terry’s leadership skills.

Cooper, who signed a new four-year deal in the summer, has been captaining Leeds in the Championship this season under the stewardship of new head coach Thomas Christiansen.

The 26-year-old has thus far made five appearances in all competitions in the present campaign, helping the club to keep three clean sheets.

And Gray, who feels Cooper has matured a great deal this season, believes the defender has the make-up to become a leader of Terry’s stature as he is already leading by example.

“He’s still relatively young as a player to lead a side.

“He leads by example and he’s very enthusiastic.

“You get players like that who pick other people up.

“You look at the likes of John Terry when he was at Chelsea. He’s a leader.

“And I think Liam has it in his make-up to be a leader.”

Cooper may have a chance to play against Terry this season, with the ex-England international joining Championship outfit Aston Villa from Premier League champions Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

Terry has been named the captain of the Villains, who are presently 18th in the standings with five points from as many games.
