Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha has expressed his disappointment at the cancellation of the Eusebio Cup, which he believes would have been a great opportunity for his men to spend time together away from Auchenhowie.

The Glasgow giants were scheduled to meet Portuguese side Benfica in a match on Friday in Canada, but the fixture was cancelled as the Lisbon outfit pulled out of the competition.

While the club apologised to the fans for the sudden change of schedule, the manager was forced to make drastic changes to his plans as his team will now be playing against Morton in a freshly arranged behind closed doors friendly on Saturday.

Caixinha has made no pretension about hiding his disappointment at the sudden change of plan, as he insists that it would have given him and his team the chance to spend some time together away from their training ground.

“It was disappointing and frustrating because we were about to be together with the team away from Auchenhowie. It was important in this moment in time, but that was the reality", the manager told his club's official website.

As far as the new schedule is concerned Caixinha said: “We already had everything planned so we needed to re-plan everything and it was good that Morton accepted the challenge to be here with us so at least we have more time to work on the principles we really need to work on.

“In Canada we were not having time to work on this content, so we need also to see the positives from it.

“The only thing that changed is that we were supposed to travel on Tuesday, come back after the match and the players would be off on Saturday and Sunday.

“We are now training from Tuesday to Friday and we are playing on Saturday morning. The players will have off the afternoon of Saturday and the whole of Sunday.”
