Everton and West Ham United have been given a big boost in the race for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho with the news he wants to leave Portugal.

William has consistently been linked with leaving Sporting Lisbon in recent years, but despite clubs showing interest, no deal has ever materialised.

But this summer the midfielder is set to push for a move as, according to Portuguese sports daily A Bola, William has decided he wants a new challenge.

William is keen to feature in a league bigger than the Portuguese championship, while he knows a move to the Premier League would mean a big increase in salary.

His situation has also not been helped by clashes with Sporting Lisbon supremo Bruno de Carvalho, meaning he is likely to lose the captain's armband next season.

Sporting Lisbon have been firm in their financial demands to sell William and it remains to be seen if the player's desire to leave leads to more flexibility on the part of the Portuguese giants.

William currently earns around €1m per year at Sporting Lisbon.
