Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette has revealed that Arsene Wenger was in a relaxed mood during the last days of his reign as Gunners manager.

Wenger stepped down from his post as Arsenal manager at the end of the season following 22 years in charge and received an emotional farewell from the players and the fans.

While his last season at Arsenal ended with the lowest points tally of his reign and the club finishing sixth in the league table, the Frenchman’s work over more than two decades was duly recognised.

Wenger showed little emotion during his farewell speech at the Emirates and even on the last day of the season the Frenchman continued to be in a more jovial mood.

However, Lacazette admits that the Frenchman was emotional as Arsenal were a huge part of the 68-year-old’s life and he did everything possible to hide his true feelings.

The striker did add that during the last days of his time as Arsenal manager, Wenger was in a more relaxed and happier mood.

Asked how he will remember Wenger, Lacazette told French sports daily L’Equipe: “The image and the respect he left for the club.

“In his last game at the Emirates, everyone sang for him. One feels that the club was part of his skin after 22 years.

“On the day of his las game he didn’t cry and that required strength but we felt his emotion.

“In the chat, he even managed to crack a few jokes, which was surely his way of hiding things.”

He added: “And during his last day he looked more relaxed, every day.”
