Villarreal coach Javi Calleja has lamented his side’s inability to kill off Rangers after scoring an early goal on Thursday night.

Rangers earned a creditable point from a 2-2 draw at the Estadio de la Ceramica in the opening group game of their Europa League campaign.

However, the night didn’t start too well for Steven Gerrard’s men when Carlos Bacca gave the home side an early lead in the first half. Scott Arfield equalised for Rangers in the 67th minute before Villarreal again took the lead two minutes later.

Kyle Lafferty netted in the 76th minute to put Rangers back on level terms and while it ended in a draw, both sides had opportunities late on to earn the maximum points.

Calleja is not happy with the point at home and insisted that his side again failed to take advantage of scoring an early goal and missed opportunities to kill the game off.

He feels it his Villarreal side allowed Rangers to get back into the game by not taking their chances.

Calleja was quoted as saying by Spanish daily Marca: “The point is not enough.

“We were on track after Bacca’s goal and we had clear chances, but we didn’t manage to kill it and we allowed them back in the game.

“It’s not overconfidence, this film has been repeated before at home.

"This time we scored two goals, but it was not enough.

“We had to kill the game and we didn’t.”

Rangers will return to European football in two weeks when they will host Rapid Vienna at Ibrox on 4th October.
