Former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae has insisted that the Gers should look for reinforcements in January to bolster their ranks with much need quality, from the middle to the front of the pitch.

The Light Blues conceded a late goal against Rapid Vienna at the Allianz Stadion on Thursday night as they failed to progress to the knockout stages from Group G of the Europa League.

Steven Gerrard’s men needed a win to ensure their safe passage to the next round, but were eventually punished while pushing forward in search of the all-important goal.

The Rangers boss conceded after the game that his current crop of players will need help in the form of quality reinforcements, if they are to do well at European level in the future.

Rae, who spent two seasons at Ibrox, insisted that Rangers should look for quality signings in January to bolster their midfield and attack to address a lack of quality.

The former Gers midfielder also added that Rangers will be disappointed with the outcome of their Europa League campaign but stressed that they can use the revenue generated from the tournament to reinforce the squad.

"They will reflect on it and be disappointed they didn't progress from the group because there was most certainly an opportunity there for them”, Rae said on Good Morning Scotland.

"Rangers are well organised and quite well structured, but ultimately they are lacking quality from middle to front.

"They need to get reinforcements in that area.

"[Gerrard] has put the question to the board and they have backed him to this point.

"They have probably made £6m-£8m and they need to get better quality in.

"There is talk of Ovie Ejaria going back to Liverpool and [Umar] Sadiq going back to Roma, so that will free up some money for Gerrard to re-invest."

Rangers have been linked with Steven Davis and Dominic Solanke ahead of the winter transfer window.
