Former Tottenham Hotspur star Garth Crooks has claimed that Manchester United know they made a mistake with the appointment of Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils suffered their fifth defeat of the season during the 3-1 loss at Anfield on Sunday in the Premier League and are now 19 points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Manchester United were comprehensively beaten and Mourinho’s tactics meant that his team offered almost nothing going forward as they were outplayed in every single department.

Jurgen Klopp’s men had 36 shots in comparison to the visitors’ six and the Premier League match was a one-sided affair.

Mourinho opted against choosing Paul Pogba in the starting eleven and the Frenchman did not play a part from the bench either as the cold wind had him frozen to his seat in what worked out to be an evening to forget for the Red Devils.

Crooks is now convinced that Mourinho is on the way out at Old Trafford.

And he feels the Manchester United board know they made a mistake in appointing him.

“Mourinho has a reputation for winning trophies but in the absence of such achievements, he is too costly and leaves clubs in bits when he departs. And he will leave”, Crooks wrote in his column for the BBC.

“Mourinho is not the right manager for United and the club executives know it. They have made a mistake.

“It's nothing personal but Mourinho does not play the sort of football that is compatible with Manchester United's philosophy.

“Quite simply, his football is dull and he's the wrong man in the wrong job, and if allowed to go unchecked, the possible sale of Pogba will be bad for business as well.”

Manchester United are currently enduring their worst start to the season after securing just 26 points from their 17 games so far this term in the Premier League.
