West Ham United are interested in signing former Cardiff City defensive midfielder Gary Medel from Besiktas during the January transfer window and are set to meet officials from the Turkish club in the coming days.

Manuel Pellegrini spent close to £100m last summer to strengthen the West Ham squad and their recent form has been seen as justifying the club’s decision to back him in the transfer market.

The Chilean wants to make additions to his squad in January as well and is keen to add more bite and steel to the West Ham midfield during the winter window.

And it has been claimed that Pellegrini is eyeing a move for the Chile international next month.

According to Turkish daily Milliyet, West Ham are set to kick off talks with Besiktas to assess the possibility of signing Medel during the winter transfer window.

The former Cardiff City midfielder is claimed to be keen on returning to the Premier League and Pellegrini has identified his fellow Chilean as a January target.

West Ham are keen to get the deal over the line as soon as possible and incorporate the 31-year-old defensive midfielder to their squad in order to get him training ahead of fielding him in January.

Besiktas are open to selling him in order to fund other moves and want a fee of around €10m from the Hammers.
