Leeds United legend Eddie Gray has conceded that it is baffling to comprehend Aston Villa’s poor defensive record due to the quality of players they have at the back.

Aston Villa have scored 16 goals in their last five games, but have won only two of those fixtures, with many pinning the blame on a porous backline.

The Midlands club have conceded eleven goals in the five games, which included a 5-5 draw against Nottingham Forest and a 2-2 result at home against Stoke City last weekend.

Gray admits that the defensive record and the sheer volume of goals they have conceded over the last five games must be a cause for concern for Aston Villa going into the second half of the season.

Their defensive record is also baffling for Gray as he feels Aston Villa have a number of quality defenders at their disposal.

The former White said on LUTV: “You only need to look at their record in the last four or five games and the number of goals they have conceded.

“I think they have conceded something like eleven goals in five games and in one of them they didn’t concede in a great victory for them at Boro.

“In the other games they have conceded two goals each and five against Forest and they don’t look secure at the back.

“It is strange when you see the players they have got there.”

Aston Villa have managed to win just five of their eleven home league games at Villa Park this season.
