Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has bemoaned the loss of left-back Borna Barisic to injury at St Johnstone.

Gerrard named Barisic in the starting line-up for the Scottish Premiership clash at McDiarmid Park as Rangers emerged as 2-1 winners to close to within a point of Celtic in the league standings.

The defender was forced off in the 41st minute, being replaced by Lee Wallace, and Gerrard is hugely disappointed with the injury blow which robs him of a player he feels brings real balance to the side.

Gerrard said on BT Sport after the game: "Yes [it looks a serious injury].

"Very, very [disappointing] because he's been really good and he gives us really good balance there.

"So disappointed. It's his third injury of the season. The kid is disappointed and so are we because he's a top player."

Barisic has only just returned from injury for Rangers and is now set to be out until the new year, which means he will miss next weeked's Old Firm meeting with rivals Celtic.

It remains to be seen who Gerrard will deploy in the left-back role in Rangers' next game, which comes on Boxing Day against Hibernian at Ibrox.
