Monaco are prepared to invest a considerable sum in order to snare defender Mamadou Sakho away from Crystal Palace in this month's transfer window.

Thierry Henry wants reinforcements to his underperforming squad in the winter window and Monaco are already reportedly closing in on signing Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

However, Monaco have struggled at the back this season as well and Henry is desperate to bring in a commanding centre-back during the January window.

The Ligue 1 giants have been studying a number of options in terms of a defender, but one player has clearly emerged as one of the top targets for the club.

According to French sports daily L’Equipe, Monaco are eyeing a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Sakho and are prepared to loosen their purse strings to attract him back to France again.

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev is personally leading the pursuit of the French defender and has made a move to probe the possibility of signing him.

A product of the Paris Saint-Germain academy, the defender joined Liverpool in 2013 and made a move to Crystal Palace four years later.

Crystal Palace could scoff at the possibility of losing Sakho in January but it remains to be seen whether Monaco manage to convince the 28-year-old to push for a return to France next month.
