Newcastle United are admirers of Sampdoria striker Gregoire Defrel, but will not be signing him in this month's transfer window, according to Sky Sports News.

The Magpies, who are looking to bolster their firepower in the transfer window, have been linked with a swoop to snap up Defrel.

Defrel, 27, is currently on the books at Sampdoria, on loan from fellow Serie A side Roma.

But he could find his playing time cut by the signing of Manolo Gabbiadini, who Sampdoria have brought in from Southampton this month.

Defrel has been linked with Newcastle, but while Rafael Benitez is a fan of the striker, the Magpies will not be making moves to sign him this month.

The Frenchman has made 18 appearances in Serie A for Sampdoria in the current campaign, scoring six goals.
