Dean Smith’s Aston Villa and Steve Bruce’s Newcastle are now doing battle for Wilson, as they look to snap up the Bournemouth striker before the new Premier League season begins.

Newcastle are offering the Cherries a deal worth up to £20m to take Wilson to St James’ Park.

However, Aston Villa have now gone in with a £21m bid for Wilson, £1m more than that on the table from Newcastle.

The Magpies still have an advantage though as it is claimed that Wilson prefers a move to St James’ Park over Villa Park.

It remains to be seen if Wilson might rethink and agree to join Aston Villa, if they see a bid accepted by Bournemouth and offer lucrative personal terms.

The jury is also out on whether Newcastle will now up their bid for the striker to match that which Aston Villa have put on the table.

Wilson found the back of the net eight times in the Premier League for Bournemouth last season as the Cherries suffered the pain of relegation.
