The Rangers squad look more settled this season and that has resulted in them being 23 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table at the moment.

Gerrard has regularly tapped the loan market, bringing in stars such as Sheyi Ojo and Florian Kamberi on temporary deals.

The Rangers boss was more active in the loan market early in his reign and Bongani Zungu is currently the only loan player at Ibrox.

Dalziel stressed that he was not surprised that Gerrard opted to sign more players on loan at the start of his reign as he did not want to get stuck with players on long contracts who could have flattered to deceive and fail to make their mark at Ibrox.

The former Gers star said on Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard: “I don’t blame Steven Gerrard when he came up to Scotland first and used the loan system as that’s what it is there for.

“There is no point in committing yourself to players and then finding out after six months or four months that they have not settled in Scottish football, not settled in at the club and they are not what you actually thought they are going to give you.

“And then you are stuck with them on two or three-year contracts.

“So you have got to use the system wisely and I think Rangers have done that.”

Rangers signed Scott Wright and Jack Simpson on permanent deals in the winter window after initially agreeing on pre-contracts with the duo.
