With injuries keeping senior shot-stoppers Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen on the sidelines, Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has asked 21-year-old Virginia to step up between the sticks.

He made only his second senior start for Everton against Manchester City in their 2-0 FA Cup exit at the weekend, a week after making his Premier League debut against Burnley.

Though Virginia’s latest two outings have come in losing efforts, his team-mate Godfrey is impressed with the young custodian’s performances.

The defender revealed Virginia is a hard worker on the training pitch and backed him to rack up more appearances for the Toffees, provided he keeps working hard and pushes on to improve.

“I was massively impressed by his performance [against Manchester City]”, Godfrey told Everton TV.

“He works hard every day in training.

“Some of the saves he made to keep us in the game were outstanding.

“I’m over the moon for him and, as long as he keeps working hard and trying to improve, then there will be plenty more appearances to come.”

It remains to be seen whether Ancelotti will get any of his senior shot-stoppers back from injury during the ongoing two-week long international break.
