Ahead of the Dortmund and Manchester City’s meeting tonight in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, a minor war of words has broken out between Watzke and Guardiola.

Guardiola pointed out that Dortmund spend a lot in terms of agent fees to attract the best young players to the club, with figures revealing that they forked out £10m more than Manchester City on agents and intermediaries.

However, Watzke believes the Manchester City manager should be the last person complaining about other clubs spending money.

He stressed that the Spaniard has spent an unprecedented amount of money since becoming Manchester City manager in 2016.

“In the last five years they have spent nearly 1bn euros on new players”, Watzke told the BBC.

“In five years.

“Who has the possibility to make this? He has not to criticise other clubs.”

Guardiola has doled out £770m in transfer fees in the five years since he became Manchester City manager, with the Citizens widely considered to be the wealthiest club in the Premier League.

He is again expected to spend big in the summer transfer window with Erling Haaland a top target.
