The Merseyside-based club got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start on Wednesday, earning a narrow 3-2 victory over Serie A side AC Milan at Anfield.
Liverpool will lock horns with Portuguese giants FC Porto later this month before visiting La Liga champions Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in October.
The Reds have been drawn into a relatively tougher group this time around, but former Premier League midfielder De Jong feels they will progress to the next round.
De Jong also insisted that Liverpool are always contenders to win the Champions League due to their experience in the competition and expects them to push for the trophy with a fully fit squad.
“Liverpool are always going to be a contender especially because they have experience in winning the Champions League“, De Jong said on beIN SPORTS.
“Of course, when they get to a full squad, when everybody is fit again, I think they will always be a contender.
“The group is difficult, but I don’t see them getting knocked out in group stages.
“I think Liverpool will go through to the next round.“
Jurgen Klopp’s side displayed their spirit in the Champions League against Milan on Saturday, coming from behind to register a 3-2 victory over the Italians.
