Lingard ignored interest from West Ham United to stay at Manchester United and wants to fight for a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

However, he has made just three substitute appearances and there are suggestions that he could struggle to get into the team given the talent Manchester United have in their squad.

Agbonlahor feels that it is difficult to see Lingard getting into Manchester United starting eleven if all their top stars are fit and ready to play.

He said on talkSPORT: “If you look at this Manchester United team, where does he start?

“They are definitely going to play a sitter – either Fred or [Scott] McTominay – and then you have got [Bruno] Fernandes and [Paul] Pogba.

“He is not going to start ahead of them in the system and Fernandes or Pogba rarely get injured.”

The former Aston Villa attacker stressed that Lingard was brilliant at West Ham last season and revelled in being the main man for the Hammers.

He believes soon the attacker will regret not leaving Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

“I just want to see him playing football.

“Last season, he was unbelievable, happy, a smile on his face, playing every week and even taking penalties.

“He was the main man at West Ham.

“I am sure he wanted to stay at Manchester United but after two or three weeks of not playing, he will be saying, ‘I wish I had gone out on loan or got the move done’.”

Lingard recently rejected an offer of a new deal from Manchester United and could leave the club on a free transfer next summer.
