Newcastle are looking to bring in more attacking recruitments before Monday’s transfer deadline and Manchester United’s Lingard is among their top targets.
The 29-year-old has struggled for game time at Old Trafford this season and is open to joining the Magpies this month to help them in their relegation battle.
Newcastle were prepared to pay the Mancunians a fee to sign Lingard on a loan deal for the remainder of the season in addition to his full wages.
However, the Tyneside giants’ offer for Lingard’s signature is some way away from Manchester United’s current valuation, which has resulted in negotiations breaking down.
If Newcastle agreed to match the Red Devils’ demands for their star, which also includes a survival bonus, the full package could have ended up costing them a figure close to £1m per game.
With five days left until the window slams shut, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle go in again with an improved bid for Lingard.
However, at present, the chances of Newcastle entering negotiations with Manchester United again over Lingard are rated as unlikely.
