Tarkowski is departing Burnley on a free transfer this summer after making more than 200 appearances for the Turf Moor club.

Everton are in line to secure the signing of the centre-back, with Tarkowski having a medical with the Toffees as his signing becomes imminent.

Speculation had linked the soon-to-be Toffees star with the Magpies before the centre-back stepped closer to a move to Goodison Park.

However, it has been claimed the Magpies were not in the race for Tarkowski this summer as one of their desired options at the back.

In addition to the Magpies, West Ham United were also linked with the centre-back and the Hammers were even claimed to have cooled their interest as they believed him to be close to Newcastle.

The centre-back is now all set to join Everton after making 35 starts in the Premier League last season for the Clarets, who were relegated.

While not pursuing Tarkowski, the Magpies are also set to complete their first senior signing of the summer as Matt Targett has completed his own medical.
