Liverpool seem to have turned a corner with back-to-back Premier League wins over Everton and Newcastle United, respectively.

They have come back into some kind of form ahead of the crucial first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie against Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Benitez admitted that Liverpool looked poor a couple of weeks ago, but they are now getting stronger as several of their key players are coming back from injury.

He pointed out that Mohamed Salah is now looking more confident with Roberto Firmino alongside him and in Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, the Reds have fantastic options.

The Spaniard also insisted that Liverpool are looking more secure at the back with Virgil van Dijk and that the team could get stronger over the course of the two legs.

Benitez told Spanish sports daily Marca: “They were less scary a few weeks ago, but now with players coming back from injury and with the pace and intensity that they can bring into a game, anything can happen.

“Salah did not have, without [Sadio] Mane, that connection with the forwards but with Firmino he is fine and with Jota and Darwin, they have options.

“The team are stronger now, Van Dijk’s return will give them security.

“Are they a bit inferior from a few years ago? Maybe yes, but the team can change completely and in 20 days, they can be even stronger.”

Liverpool are still sitting eighth in the Premier League standings on 35 points, seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, who have played two games more than the Reds.
