Roberto Mancini plucked the 23-year-old striker from the Argentinian top flight and named him in the Italy national squad this month.
He scored on his debut against England last week and again netted in his second appearance against Malta.
His performances for the Azzurri have piqued the interest of several clubs in Italy and across Europe, including in the Premier League.
And according to Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport, West Ham are amongst the clubs who have their eyes on him.
It has been claimed that the Hammers have already made an enquiry into potentially signing him.
Gianluca Scamacca is likely to push for a move away from West Ham in the summer and the club are expected to be in the market for a striker.
And Retegui has emerged as an option for the Hammers after his two goals for Italy during the international break.
It remains to be seen whether the enquiry translates into a concrete offer for the forward, who is currently on loan at Tigre from Boca Juniors.
