Chelsea have been working on a deal for Caicedo for much of the summer transfer window, but have been unwilling to match Brighton’s asking price so far.

The Seagulls feel that Declan Rice’s £105m move to Arsenal has set the benchmark this summer and are determined not to sell Caicedo for under what they believe is his fair value.

Chelsea are still keen on Caicedo and the midfielder would prefer a move to Stamford Bridge over Anfield.

However, Liverpool have now gone in with a firm bid and it is suggested that their offer is superior to Chelsea’s.

Whether it is enough to be accepted by Brighton remains to be seen, but Liverpool are now in the mix.

Liverpool have been trying to sign Romeo Lavia from Southampton.

With no fee agreed with Southampton though, Chelsea have jumped into that race and offered more than Liverpool have put on the plate for the midfielder.

Liverpool now appear to have switched their attention to Caicedo.
