The Magpies made a big splash in the market early in the window when they signed Sandro Tonali from AC Milan for a big fee.

However, financial fair play restrictions meant that they had to wait a while and sell Allan Saint-Maximin before completing deals to sign Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento.

Newcastle are still active in the market but FFP issues mean that they cannot spend big before moving on a few players before the end of the transfer window.

Howe conceded that he needs at least one more new signing to have the kind of depth needed to deal with the challenges of being in the Champions League next season.

The Newcastle manager said in a press conference: “Personally, I’d love one more player and then I think we’d have the ideal depth at this moment with the injuries that we currently have.

“But, let’s wait and see.”

Newcastle will open their Premier League campaign with a home game against Aston Villa on Saturday.
