The Whites were pushing to sign the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder even after he initially knocked back an approach from Leeds last week.

The negotiations were revived over the weekend and Leeds were optimistic about convincing Amiri to join the club.

He even flew to Leeds on Monday by private jet after signalling he would join and was given a tour of the club’s training base, but Amiri then told officials that he did not want the move.

According to German magazine Kicker, Leeds were left shocked by Amiri’s turnaround and rejection.

The club felt that his decision to fly to Leeds to take a tour of the club’s training ground was a sign that he was ready to complete the move.

It is suggested that the most obvious reason for Amiri rejecting Leeds is that he has interest from another club where he would have no concerns over signing.

Amiri has been worried about dropping into the second tier with Leeds, especially given concerns they may not come straight back up.

The midfielder’s wife is also heavily pregnant, something else which has weighed into his thinking.

French giants Marseille were interested in him recently, but the prospects of a move to the south of France faded.
