The defender had been expected to move to Blackburn Rovers earlier in the transfer window, but the Ewood Park switch did not materialise.

He had interest too from Cardiff City, however a lined up move to Wales collapsed.

Batth is in the final year of his deal at Sunderland and it is expected he will not be offered an extension.

The defender could still head for pastures new before the transfer window closes this evening.

Batth, an experienced centre-back, is likely to be an attractive proposition for a host of sides.

The 32-year-old has made just one appearance for Sunderland this season, featuring against Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Cup.

He has sat on the bench as an unused substitute in all of the Black Cats’ league matches so far.
