Ampadu was again influential in the middle of the park as a ten-man Leeds battled to play out a 0-0 draw against Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Welshman has been a constant in the Leeds team since joining the club from Chelsea in the summer and has been one of their best players at the start of the season.

Redfearn insisted that Leeds have to make sure that Ampadu is healthy and fit for most of the games as he has been a very important player for Leeds in the ongoing campaign.

Leeds have kept three clean sheets on the trot and the former Leeds boss stressed that Ampadu is as responsible for them as the Whites defenders.

The former Whites manager, speaking after the Hull draw, said on BBC Radio Leeds: “He is vitally important that he stays fit.

“We have got to try and wrap him in cotton wool somehow and not have him injured because he does so much.

“A number of times I have said, ‘brilliant pinch’ or ‘great interception’.

“Tonight, he just read things, got his foot in and stopped things at source and I think he has been as responsible as the centre-backs in the clean sheets they have been getting.”

Ampadu is almost certain to start if he is fit when Leeds host Watford at Elland Road in the Championship this weekend.
