Motherwell and St Johnstone are moving to try to sign Connor Smith from Hearts, with a permanent switch for the midfielder not having been ruled out, according to the Edinburgh Evening News.

The 21-year-old is attracting attention during this month’s transfer window and could be set for a move away from Tynecastle.

Motherwell and St Johnstone are admirers and moving to either would keep Smith in the Scottish Premiership.

Both clubs are holding talks with Smith in an effort to convince him of a move now.

Hearts are open to sending Smith out on a loan stint, but crucially, a permanent move for the midfielder has not been ruled out.

Smith, an attacking midfielder, spent the first half of the season on loan in England at Scunthorpe United.

He clocked 16 appearances in the National League North, chipping in with six goals in the process.

Smith’s deal at Tynecastle is due to expire in the summer and, out of Hearts’ plans, the club know he needs to be playing regular football.

All eyes will be on whether Smith does permanently end his association with Hearts this month.
