Denmark national team manager Kasper Hjulmand has revealed that he has not called up Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley because others are currently showing more than he is.

The 23-year-old midfielder is a regular in Celtic’s side and has been a standout performer for them, scoring eleven goals and registering 14 assists in all competitions so far.

This week Denmark announced their squad for upcoming international friendlies against Switzerland and the Faroe Islands, and Bhoys midfielder O’Riley is not part of the squad.

Hjulmand admitted that O’Riley offers something different from the players in the squad, but stressed that the six players he has picked ahead of the Celtic man are showing more at present.

The Danish manager also revealed that the Celtic star is one of the people close to him.

“I think Matt is one of the closest people to me”, Hjulmand was quoted as saying by Danish outlet Bold.

“He also has some attacking qualities and is a slightly different type of player than the ones on the team.

“I like Matt, but I think the six we have in the team are better as it is right now.

“But again, a lot can happen.”

O’Riley has featured only once for the Danish national team so far in his career and the Celtic star will be hoping to perform well for the Bhoys to get into Hjulmand’s 2024 European Championship team.
