Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has ‘convinced’ Monchi to go after Villarreal midfielder Alex Baena, but the Premier League side will ‘negotiate to reduce’ the fee needed to sign him.

One win from their last two Premier League games will secure Champions League football for the Villans this season in what would be a big feather in Emery’s cap.

Aston Villa are already looking forward to next season and want to be aggressive in the transfer market in the summer.

Emery is a big fan of Baena, a player he managed at Villarreal and has ‘convinced’ sporting director Monchi to try and take him to Villa Park in the next transfer window.

And according to Spanish outlet El Desmarque, Aston Villa are already working on trying to bring down the price of the midfielder.

Baena has a buyout clause worth €60m in his contract and Villarreal would prefer to get the full fee.

However, it is claimed that Aston Villa will ‘negotiate to reduce’ the fee needed to sign Baena.

However, the club have not ruled out paying the full release clause if a compromise is not reached in the summer.

Barcelona are also interested in him but will need to sell players if they are to afford to pay a big fee for Baena.
