Sunderland are interested in signing Caen striker Alexandre Mendy, but no deal is imminent and the club are surprised by suggestions it is, according to the Sunderland Echo.

The Black Cats are in the market for a striker and the club are not shying away from looking at more experienced forwards.

Mendy has been heavily linked with a move away from French second-tier side Caen to Sunderland in the ongoing transfer window.

There is talk of a deal being imminent between the two clubs for the striker to move to the Stadium of Light this summer.

However, it has been claimed that talk of the forward joining Sunderland imminently has been played down and the club are surprised by the suggestion.

Sunderland are interested in Mendy and are considering signing him but no deal is on the horizon at the moment.

The 30-year-old is said to be preferring a move to Sunderland over other options this summer.

However, Sunderland are looking at other options as well despite talk of Mendy joining the club.
