Former Leeds United defender Jon Newsome thinks that one Whites star terrorised Manchester City loan man Callum Doyle on Tuesday night, as Norwich City played out a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.

The 20-year-old defender joined Norwich on loan from Premier League outfit Manchester City and has been a regular in the starting line-up for the Canaries.

Norwich boss Johannes Hoff Thorup has utilised Doyle as left-back this season and on Tuesday against Leeds he was given a big examination by winger Willy Gnonto.

Newsome pointed out that Gnonto showed in the first half that Doyle lacks the ability to play in the left-back role as he failed to stop the Leeds winger and also did not track him back.

The Norwich boss changed the Manchester City loanee’s position to a centre-back role in the second half and former top-flight defender Newsome thinks that Doyle looked better in the left-sided centre-back role.

“I saw him before a few years ago; I think it was with England Under-19s”, Newsome said on BBC Radio Leeds.

“I thought at the time before, ‘he is a bit of a stocky lad’.

“He seemed to play better when he was the left-sided centre-back in the second half because he does not have the legs and Willy Gnonto showed that for the first 45 minutes.

“He ran him to death, ran in behind; he had no desire to get back in and track him and it was a free for all really and I think if Gnonto’s final pass in the first probably ten minutes was better, we would have created a bit more.”

The Manchester City loanee will be hoping to come back stronger in the next game when Norwich take on Hull City on Saturday.
