Zenit St. Petersburg are thinking of trying their luck for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to Russian outlet Championnat.

While the winter transfer window has slammed shut in almost all of Europe's major leagues, it still has 22 days to run in Russia and presents Zenit with the chance to do business.

A new defender is high on the club's wishlist and Vermaelen has been identified as a target.

However, even if the Russian giants launch a bid for the Belgian, it remains unlikely that Arsenal will sell.

The Gunners are battling in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup and, with England's transfer window having closed, would be left unable to sign a replacement for Vermaelen.

The former Ajax defender has been consistently linked with the exit door at Arsenal though.

Vermaelen regularly plays second fiddle to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker is the heart of the Gunners' defence when the pair are fit, something which has drastically limited his playing time.
