Barcelona are setting their sights on Basel defender Fabian Schar as an answer to their long-running defensive problems.

A new centre-back has been on the agenda at the Camp Nou for some time and Barcelona failed last summer with approaches for Chelsea's David Luiz and Liverpool's Daniel Agger.

Now, according to Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan giants are extremely keen on Schar, and are considering a summer swoop for the Switzerland international.

However, Barcelona could encounter significant opposition for the 22-year-old.

Arsenal and Juventus have long been interested in the Basel centre-back, while Chelsea are also alive to his potential, although the recent signing of Kurt Zouma by the Blues could cool that.

Schar was scooped up by Basel from Swiss minnows FC Wil in 2012 and quickly exploded onto the scene.

The defender is also now a regular fixture in the Switzerland national team.
