Everton now sit just one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal in the Premier League and vitally have a game in hand, meaning they could overhaul the Gunners for the final Champions League spot.

And Howard dubbed it a "signature" Everton display.

"One of our signature performances in my time at Everton", the goalkeeper told Sky Sports.

"The way we controlled the game, kept it tight at the back."

The American is now sure that Everton can finish in the top four, clawing back the gap to Arsenal, and he sent out a warning.

"We knew if we could take three points we're hot on their tails.

"We'd like to think so [that we’ll get a top four finish].

"We have to believe that because we're running out of games."
