The 24-year-old is not ready to accept that Newcastle have nothing left to fight for this season and believes that the club are looking towards a strong finish to the season to try to finish in the top eight.

"We as a club, and we as professional footballers, want to finish as high as we can. At the minute that is realistically chasing eighth place, so that is what we will try to do”, Gosling told the club’s official site.

"Am I still confident we can do it? Yes, of course.”

The former Everton man is confident that Newcastle will beat Southampton for a top-eight finish and believes a strong finish to the season will lift the mood of the club and the supporters.

"There's only a couple of points between us and Southampton, we have quality players here and we all want to have a strong finish to the season."

Newcastle United’s best finish in the Premier League era is second and they achieved it in the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons. The Magpies’ last league triumph came way back in the 1926/27 season when they finished top on 56 points followed by the Huddersfield on 51 points.
