Mikel Arteta has hailed Arsenal's comfortable 3-0 win over Newcastle United this evening which has put them on the brink of securing a top four spot.

Goals from Laurent Koscielny (26th minute), Mesut Ozil (42nd minute) and Olivier Giroud (66th minute) put the Magpies to the sword in a game in which the Gunners were never really threatened.

The three points moves Arsenal on to 73 points from 36 games, four ahead of fifth-placed Everton, who will not be able to catch the Gunners if Arsene Wenger's men can beat West Brom on Sunday.

And Arteta feels the win at the Emirates Stadium was vital.

"I think it was a good win, we had most of the chances and the possession", the midfielder told Sky Sports.

"It was very important for us to win tonight and the goal difference could be very important for us.

"The first goal was really important. We needed to break them down and they opened up a bit.

"We need to keep it up because everything is very tight and we want to finish on a high; we've got the FA Cup final as well."
