Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is interested in the Gunners snapping up Lille midfielder Rio Mavuba this summer, as a potential replacement for Mikel Arteta.

Arteta will be 33 before the end of the next Premier League season and thoughts have increasingly turned towards his eventual successor in the heart of the Arsenal midfield.

And Wenger could well raid his homeland for the answer to the problem, according to France TV Sport, with Mavuba in Arsenal's crosshairs.

The experienced midfielder, who has plied his trade with Lille since 2008, a spell which has seen him collect a Ligue 1 title, is part of Didier Deschamps' France squad for this summer's World Cup.

Mavuba began his career at Bordeaux, helping the club win the Coupe de la Ligue in 2006/07.

He moved on to Spanish side Villarreal in the summer of 2007, however struggled to command a spot in the Yellow Submarine's starting eleven and returned to France in January 2008 with Lille, initially on loan.

At international level Mavuba has won eleven caps for France.
