Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has called for England manager Roy Hodgson to hand Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling a starting role against Italy this evening.

Hodgson's men kick off their World Cup campaign in Brazil by facing the Italians in the hot and humid conditions of the Amazonian city of Manaus.

Calls for the former Liverpool manager to unleash the squad's young talents have been growing. And Henry believes Sterling should line up against the Italians on account of his form for Brendan Rodgers' men in the recently concluded Premier League season.

Speaking on the BBC, the former Arsenal and France striker said: "I would like to see Sterling out there – I like him.

"He played ever so well with Liverpool in the last three months.

"Hopefully he can perform."

Sterling featured in only one of England's two warm-up games in the United States after being sent off for tangling with Antonio Valencia in the Three Lions' 2-2 draw against Ecuador.
