Arsene Wenger has revealed Thomas Vermaelen will not play any part in the Emirates Cup over the weekend due to injury, while the Belgian could yet leave the club.

Vermaelen, who has been strongly linked with Manchester United, has only one year remaining on his contract with Arsenal and has admitted he is unsure on signing an extension.

The centre-back slipped out of favour 18 months ago, with Wenger preferring to field Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the heart of defence.

Asked about Vermaelen at a press conference this afternoon, Wenger replied: "Vermaelen is injured.

"It is a possibility that he goes."
