Arsenal are looking towards Italy to provide a potential replacement for Thomas Vermaelen, who was sold to Spanish giants Barcelona last week.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is aiming to replace the Belgian before the transfer window closes, despite admitting doing so is a tough task.

A number of defenders are on the Frenchman's radar, including Liverpool's Daniel Agger, Schalke's Benedikt Howedes and Olympiacos' Kostas Manolas.

But a new name is now under consideration at the Emirates Stadium, according to Italian daily Tuttosport – Juventus' Leonardo Bonucci.

The defender is under contract with Juventus until the summer of 2017 and takes home around €1.8m per season in Turin.

It remains to be seen whether Juventus will be open to selling the defender, who has been a mainstay of their backline, and whether Bonucci is open to heading to England.

Bonucci joined Juventus in 2010 from Bari and has helped the Turin giants to the last three consecutive Serie A titles.
