Arsene Wenger has stated that Arsenal are desperate to go through to this season’s Champions League group stage.

The Gunners will take on Turkish outfit Besiktas in the first leg of their Champions League playoff tie at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium tomorrow.

The Frenchman stressed the importance of playing in the Champions League for a club like Arsenal.

"We are desperate to do it because we want to play in the Champions League and we know how big these games are", Wenger told the club’s official site.

Arsenal earned a hard-fought 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday and the 64-year-old is hoping that his squad can quickly recover from the exertions of the weekend.

"We had to give a lot, hopefully we will recover and be ready for Tuesday night.”

Wenger insisted that the Gunners are desperate to go through, even though he feels that Besiktas, who boast former Chelsea striker Demba Ba, are no pushovers.

"We are desperate to go through, no matter what it costs we want to go through.

“We have always a difficult draw, we had Fenerbahce last year, this time we have Besiktas. It's difficult.”
